Define: A Genuine Sports Fan
Sports fan: "an enthusiastic devotee of sports."
I believe a sports fan should be defined as an unconditional devotee of a sport. Why is it that each year the winners of the World Series, World Cup, Super Bowl and so on, increase their merchandise revenue by a significant percentage? Oh, because people jump on the bandwagon - that's why. People always seem to want to be a part of a winning team, which is understandable; however, once that team does poorly, certain "fans", will run off quickly to find the "better" team.
How can you call yourself a true fan, when you will run away from supporting them the moment they do poorly? I can understand fan frustration by all means, however to talk so harshly about a team member or entire team, when you yourself could probably never handle national pressure the way have, is so hypocritical.
People like that are like the dead beat dads of sports, realize they don't like the situation and run off.
For every Yankee fan I meet, I interrogate them - finding out since when they were a Yankee fan. If you were a fan of them before they started winning, I give you credit for sticking in there throughout their entire journey. Or, if your parents were Yankee fans and passed it onto you as a tradition, then I can understand as well. Yankee schmankee, you see hats everywhere, you rarely ever see Kansas City Royals hat. Why? Because they suck. Don't they need fans too? Maybe if more people weren't such bandwagon idiots, KC could actually get some fan revenue and some encouragement/incentive to actually win more.
Any other fan who has jumped on the bandwagon within the past few years, should not be allowed into games for God's sake. If you have jumped on the bandwagon acting all high and mighty about that team, you're a schmuck I tell you - a fake.

I for one, am a 4th generation fan, I swear - sometimes it feels as if it's just as important as my family's religion. Word has it, that my great grandmother used to take the train in by herself just to see the our team play. Now that is a fan.
The reason why I am going on such a rant, is due to the fact that recently my favorite team has been doing very poorly, and as someone who personally knows one of the players (who did not quite play up to par these past few days), I saw firsthand the absolute written abuse on his personal online page by people who formerly kissed his ass. I mean these "fans" were brutal. As far as I'm concerned, any moron who has the balls to say such things, isn't a fan whatsoever.
Don't ever cheer for a team if you are a conditional supporter. What is a team when they don't have supporters to pick them up when they aren't at their best?
If you want a "team" that will never really lose, go watch cheerleading.

I completely agree with you that bandwagon fans are a serious problem in sports today. I happen to be a Cubs fan, so we really haven’t had this problem this year but we saw it to a great deal following the hope inducing 2003 season. On the other hand, I’m not sure I like the idea of unconditional support for your team. Teams, players and managers make mistakes and just because we question them about it doesn’t make us any less of a fan. This should never go as far as a personal attack, unless Dusty Baker is involved, but I truly believe that real fans that have sat through the lean times have earned the right to question management decisions and point out win a player is dissapointing us with their performance. After all we are the ones that keep buying tickets and jerseys despite the losing seasons.
