I'm Not Dead + Google Promoting Other Search Engines?

I've been MIA.  I'd like to say I was busy changing the world or striking up the most insane business deals but neither are the case.  Either way, I'm here today and I'm posting so that's a good thing?

I just noticed when I searched on Google (exclusively through Google Chrome), that after you type in the keyword you are looking for, Google suggests you search on various other search engines?  I'm confused!  Yahoo is the first they suggest you search on and MSN is nowhere to be found on the list. *Update: My mommy brain seemed to have missed "LIVE" on the list.  So yes, MSN is on the list*  Sure this makes it easier for us as searches looking for the most comprehensive list of results without having to pull up a million browsers but what is the benefit for Google?  Innerestin'.

Update: I ran a few more searches and the suggestion of other search engines is gone.  Could this be something Google is testing?

Who is Sarah Palin?

This is not a political blog whatsoever but I just want to quickly comment on who McCain who has chosen as his VP nominee which increasingly show us just how ridiculous his decision-making skills are.

He has picked a woman who he has met ONCE.  The second time he met her, it was to offer her the nomination, Are we serious?  McCain, you're certainly not a young guy.  God Forbid you become President and God Forbid you die during your term, you're entrusting a completely inexperienced candidate to lead our country?

It's almost as if he wanted a woman or a "surprising" candidate from the beginning and when looking at the list, he simply thought "Hey, I guess she'd be good!"

Who is she?  Has anyone ever heard of her?  She's beautiful, she's smart and I'm sure she'd be good in various leadership roles as she has been in the past but as Vice President?  I'm all for a woman being in the White House but Hillary was more of my idea of a woman who could handle the job as Commander in Chief - not this nobody.

Obama's choice of Biden seemed "right".  This just feels "off".  How many Republicans can actually say they feel confident in his choice?

Oh and for the comments about McCain trying to attract Hillary voters - that's almost insulting.  Palin's views and Clinton's views are OPPOSITE.  Why would we vote for her?  Simply because she is a female?  She is extremely conservative and as someone who was planning on voting for Hillary, it was based on her views more than her being a female.  Just because Palin has a uterus doesn't mean anything to me.

This is more proof that McCain simply is NOT right for our country.

OBAMA please!

PS. Who thinks she kinda looks like SNL's Tina Fey? (Or is it just the glasses?)

Update:  I've found Palin's "blog"!  Ha ha - this is priceless - http://sarahpalin.typepad.com/

*Please note: If you can't figure it out already, that blog above is a SATIRE blog for comedic purposes and not real. (Thank God!)

I Learned the Hard Way – Gmail Drive = NOT Good

Ugh.

I just got locked out of my Gmail account. How terribly inconvenient. I had seen reviews about Gmail Drive in several places stating how it enables your computer to send your files to your Gmail since each account allows quite a bit of storage. Silly me. I was not aware it apparently violates Gmail's Terms of Service and as a result, have been officially "locked down."

When I try to login, it reads:

Account Lockdown: Unusual Activity Detected

Unusual account activity includes, but is not limited to:

Receiving, deleting, or downloading large amounts of mail via POP in a short period of time.
Sending a large number of undeliverable messages (messages that bounce back).
Using file-sharing or file-storage software, browser extensions, or third party software that automatically logs in to your account.
Leaving multiple instances of your Gmail account open.
Browser-related issues. Please note that if you find your browser continually reloading while attempting to access your Inbox, it’s probably a browser issue, and it may be necessary to clear your browser’s cache and cookies.
If you feel that you have been using your Gmail account according to the Gmail Terms of Use, you can troubleshoot your problem by clicking here.

So an easy way to put it - Do NOT use Gmail Drive... there's no use for it if it can't even back up your files without screwing you.

Blogger Being Sued for $20 Million by Television Production Company

Wow. As someone who has worked in television production, blogs and has certainly called out a few unethical businesses myself, I am quite disappointed and angered to see an innocent blogger getting sued by a bullying production TV company.

It all began when blogger Leslie Richard who is the owner of an eco-fashion business, wrote about her experience (in this article) with a company called Vision Media Television who offered to do a special on her and her clothing line that would be seen by millions on CNN, PBS and all over Europe. It wasn't until they claimed that she had to pay over $24,000 in hard costs so that they could create this segment.

Vision Media Television

That is utterly ridiculous! Any reputable production company would never make YOU pay to be on their networks and especially to the tune of 24K. As someone who felt it was unethical, she did what most of us bloggers do - took it to her blog so that she could save others from running into the same ordeal. With several other people getting hounded by this company, the Google searches rose quickly and soon hundreds of other eco-friendly businesses found her site too and began commenting with their experiences. In turn, Vision Media Television began threatening her and is now suing her for 20 MILLION in damages.

This brings up many issues and also questions the First Amendment and how bloggers are able to use free speech without crossing a "legal" line. The area is gray as the internet is still "new" in terms of laws applying to it.

As more people write about this story, I hope Vision Media Television realizes that they are only putting themselves in an even WORSE light than they already are in. This is NOT good for business guys...

I stumbled across an article published just a few days ago on NYTimes.com, which reaffirms how "shady" this company truly is. It seems that while they may not be a "scam" by legal definition, they certainly are misleading folks into believing that they are in fact connected with PBS (which PBS states specifically on their website that they are NOT) and while asking for that kind of money from green businesses/non profits -- it's just dispicable in my honest opinion. Again, if you are a reputable establishment, you will not produce content with the subject's money. That to me, is not a company that should be in business.

Have you ever called out a business you thought was unethical on your blog?

Update on Serp Spam: Other (Random) Keywords Targeted

The rather upsetting Serp spam (That I spoke of in my last article) that inhibits Google under my name is still there and I have since reported it but am unsure as to how long it will take for them to remove it.  (I'm guessing a while)

The URL of the site is stio-group.com/english/_images/7gcbc/kate-dickman.html

What I did was simply paste stio-group.com/english/_images/7gcbc into Google and up came two more results that yielded the same horrible website.  One was for a woman by the name of Linda Zillman (who barely yields any Google results but is apparently the wife of some President at a University in Maine - random?) as well as results for some sort of Mitsubishi power supply?  When searching for either of these (very rarely searched terms), up pops up the same infected site that comes up for mine.   I looked a bit deeper and it seems another keyword - Dungeon Lords Patch 1 4 (which is apparently a popular gaming download) is infected as well.

The oddest thing of all?  The STIO Group situated at http://www.stio-group.com/, is a French Freight Forwarding and Logistics company.

Talk about random.  I'm pretty confused to say the least... :-/

Yet ANOTHER update:

I decided to try my name on Yahoo & MSN and I see it on the second page of MSN for my name! Only this time under a totally different URL (TWO sites)......it's under Kate Klingsmith (who is ALL over the web) but ranks for my name..whhhhhhhhhhhhhhhat is this nonsense!!?!?! It basically looks like this type of spam/malware is randomly searching out keywords to rank high for and infect and somehow using various websites as URL's to direct you to... I wonder how many other sites/keywords they hijacked? If you look closer, they are trying to rank for "Kate McCann - Mother of Maddie" (the little girl from the UK who is missing as well as some forest products and just a bunch of things. Is this common at all?

SERP SPAM

17Aug/087

Oh My Word – A New Way To Spam? SERP Spam?

Like most people within the tech industry, I oftentimes Google my name to see what sites are ranking for it.  While most of the results on the SERP are of me, many of them are of other Kate Dickman's.  (Go figure, there's quite a few of them out there!)  Well today I noticed a new site ranking for my name.  The page description made absolutely no sense but I was curious to see what it was.  Now maybe this is something that is common but I personally have never heard of it.  I guess the best way to put it is SERP (Search Engine Results Page) Spam?  Again, I'm by far NO SEO expert but this is new to me.

SERP Spam?

SERP Spam?

When I looked up the term SERP Spam, the results that showed up for a keyword or a term was blatantly spam but this?  This is a bit worse.  Here you have a strange unidentifiable site that shows up in the results only to lead you to a bad site that starts psychotically "scanning" your computer and pulling up porn images that SUPPOSEDLY are on your PC and starts flashing images of them (something I really don't need to see) as well as prompting a download of some file.  Again I have never seen this before!  If this is a new method of infiltrating the security of people's computers, then we're in trouble.  It'll be an easy way for people to get viruses while innocently searching for a certain term.  I mean come on, my name?  How in the world?  Lately I've noticed a lot more queries for my name but not enough for something like this to happen I would think.  Definitely sitting here in bewilderment.... if anyone can explain this, let me know!

*UPDATE* 6:05pm 8/18/08 -- It's still up and moving up higher in the rankings....wish Matt Cutts could take a look at this but we all know he's busier than busy!  Again, if any SEO's could take a look and let me know what may be done about this or what could have caused this.... let me know!

*UPDATE #2-10:30pm 8/19/08 - New Post

Sites I Like That You Probably Have Never Heard Of

I was thinking about these particular sites that I use(d) and how I don't use them as much because many of my friends simply are not open minded about setting up a new profile other than on sites they know about.  Me?  I love any new concept and will sign up for just about any site to at least give it a test drive.  While it can be time consuming to keep up on every site, some of these newer web 2.0 ventures truly are worth a shot.

The first is BrightKite.  Many people within the online marketing industry know what it is but those out of it certainly don't.  BrightKite is a location based version of "checking in."  If you're familiar with the status updates on Facebook, it is similar to that only you "check in" from whatever location you're at - whether it be the Starbucks down the street from you or whether you are vacationing near the Grand Canyon.   You can see others who are also checked in close to you and see what they're up to.  Not only that, but you can post pictures and/or notes from where you're at.  If you're on a boat doing whale watching and get a sweet picture on your camera phone of that lovely whale's tail, you can send it directly from your phone to the site.  Unfortunately I don't really know many people on it, so viewing photos of what a stranger ate for breakfast isn't really my thing, but if anyone wants to sign up - do let me know!  I've got 8 invites left.

The second is Wallop.  This site is a "VIP" only invite site filled with socialites from all around the world - particularly Los Angeles.  It's pretty entertaining and if it was more open, I'd say it would be a hit.  If you ever get the chance to log in, the interface is pretty amazing.  The customizable site options are rather impressive as well and the options seem pretty endless.  Sometimes I feel like it's Web 3.0 if you ever saw it.  It can be a tad bit confusing but overall I really enjoyed using it when I first signed on.  I don't sign on as much due to having invited my friends but none really being willing to sign up or staying on themselves.  I think it would be a great tool if more folks I knew were on it.

Then there is Multiply.  I think more people know of this site than the other two I mentioned but this site is just greatness.  I really can't pinpoint why I like it really, but I guess it's a lot more cleaner than Myspace and offers more in ways.   You're able to post blogs, videos, photos, reviews and more.  Again, my site on here has not been updated in a year or two due to no one catching on to it as well.

It's quite funny that sites like Myspace and Facebook are so popular when you've got sites that have so much more functionality and are far more user-friendly that are available.  It's all about who comes first.  Facebook and Myspace have been here for years and all new start ups that are similar are almost bound to perhaps gain some momentum but not enough to ever trump the two giants.  It's a shame too - these sites really could have some potential!

GFail

If it's not Twitter, it's something else....

My beloved Gmail has let me down for the past hour (as I see it has let down everyone else).

It all began when I sent a contact an email and it gave me an error saying it had not been sent. I pressed send again to get the same message and then again. By the time I knew it, although I had been told the email didn't go through, this poor recipient stalkerishly received 5 of the same emails. Then this dreadful screen came up...
Gmail Fails

Now my life is frozen.... no access to my mail and no access to my calendar... Thanks for everything GFail.

As Andy Beal has stated...we officially now need an image that is Gmail's equivalence to the Fail Whale.

Facebook – Mixing Personal With Business

Lately I've been making a lot of business connections, and the majority of them have a Facebook page and have been kindly adding me.  I've been accepting them with the desire to connect more with them and see what they're up to.  There is, however, one problem.... my Facebook was created during my "pre-professional" days.  What does this mean?

This means that there are photos of me out and about in Manhattan and in my college dorms, maybe doing some funny questionable things, as well as pictures of my family and close friends.  I know they always say, "Don't put anything on the web that will come back to haunt you," but these photos truly aren't that bad (but certainly may make you lose a bit of professional credibility), and with Facebook's privacy controls, you can prevent the outer world from logging on.

The question is, do I create a professional business profile for Facebook?  I barely have time to update my social networks as of now, so the thought of having to maintain two Facebook profiles makes me cringe.  The question:  How do you handle it, exactly?  Do you simply make your profile "business friendly," or would that take away the "you" factor that your friends (old and new) love so much about you.

That puts into mind the question of how to best handle your social networks as these days, more and more professionals are connecting on them.  I would love to hear and add feedback on the subject.  What have you experienced?

*Update - 7/15/10: I still see traffic coming in on here so I figured I'd let you know that I've been maintaining 2 for a while now.  It's true that personal contacts never really comment on industry-related posts and I like to have the other account to read industry-news and keep in touch with business contacts but I go in waves where I'm pretty active on the business account and then other waves where I'm totally dead.  It definitely is difficult to maintain two and I must admit, my personal one gets 10x more attention but it is good to have the business one - particularly since Facebook has made it nearly impossible to personalize your settings now for each respective group of people in your life.

Myspace – Friend or Foe in Social Media Marketing?

Business owners are constantly being told to embrace the web and look to it for their next advertising and promotional efforts.  When people foretold that social media was the "next big thing" for companies to utilize, others automatically thought of Myspace.

It's not surprising, considering it's the number one social networking site on the web and currently boasts about 60 million visitors per month.   Despite these staggering numbers, is Myspace really worth a businesses' time and effort?

I'd have to say for the most part,  it's not worth more than 5 minutes a day.  Having signed up in 2003, I used it for genuine networking and marketing purposes.  This was when there were enough users to get the word out about a product or website, and people were eager and willing to listen to what you had to say.  It was a new way of communicating on the web, and its innovative appeal spread quickly.   As I previously stated in this post, Myspace has become a haven for spammers and annoyingly persistent bands alike.  Although Myspace has taken action against these folks, and the aggravation has decreased since I wrote that article, I truly do not see the incentive for businesses to set up a Myspace page anymore.

If you write to someone about your product, you will get flagged for spam and soon deleted.  Your best hope is to create a page and add people who may be within your targeted demographic and hope that when they see your (hopefully intriguing) main image, that they will click on your page and be interested in what you have to offer.  Since people are blasted with these types of profiles on a daily basis, they are reluctant to care about what you're trying to sell on the network.  Personally, I use it to keep in touch with my friends from around the world and not to learn about new brands.  Here and there I will come across an interesting new venture and will check it out, but that is a rare occurrence, and I cannot imagine it's different with any other user.

In turn, the amount of time it takes to create a compelling profile and add all these friends, is not worth it for the visits you may receive to your website.  The average user on Myspace is between about 15-30 years old, so a company must also keep that in mind.  Recently I heard that Cartier set up a Myspace page.  This is certainly a bit unusual for a luxury brand to use a site such as this, but I'm definitely interested to see the reports on the impact of this particular campaign.  I just can't see the average Myspace user being interested in the Cartier brand.  Perhaps the interest is there, but is the money?  While some would say it could be good for branding purposes, does it actually help or hurt the brand?  Myspace has some negative connotations associated with it these days, so it's up for debate.

I'm not saying there isn't a brand/company/product that can't benefit from such a site, but most are wasting their time.  Myspace is not what it used to be and we'll stick by that statement.

New reports actually show that conversions of Myspace targeted ads are more impressive than you'd think.  Perhaps that could be an option for advertising, though it's more about pay per click and less about social media marketing.  Either way, think first before setting yourself up on "SpamSpace".
